The 15.5 metre high monument to Stalin was unvelied in 1955 and stood for just seven years, till 1962, when it was dynamited as the cult of Stalin finally fell apart and the true horror of his reign came to light. On the crumbling marble plinth created for the statue now stands a metronome, erected in 1991.
