Church of St. Nicholas

this Sight was last updated on 4 Nov 08

Another masterpiece of work by Kilian Ignaz Dietzenhofer (also of the St. Nicholas Church in Old Town Square), this church is in the High Baroque style and was finished in 1761. Dietzenhofer didn't live to see the end of its construction.
Inside, the Statues of the Church Fathers dominate the front area, standing at the four corners of the crossing. There is also a fantastic Baroque organ, built in 1746 and played by Wolfganag Amadeus Mozart in 1787.
The high altar, with its copper statue of St. Nicholas, and the Pulpit, decorated with golden cherubs are rivaled only by the Celebration of the Holy Trinity fresco by Franz Palko adorning the dome ceiling.
Today the Church often serves as a concert venue for classical music.
