You can't miss this one. The huge statue adorned with graffiti and seated tourists was designed by Ladislav Saloun and unveiled in 1915 for the 500th anniversary of the death of Jan Hus.
Born in a small Bohemian village and later becoming a Protestant Reformist preacher, Jan Hus's objections to the wealth and corruption of the Catholic Church struck a chord with Czechs from across all walks of life.
He was burnt at the stake and pronounced a heretic in 1415 for his beliefs, but this didn't stop his followers, the Hussites, from launching one of the most famous and successful military campaigns ever against Catholic hegemony. In the Hussite Wars, they achieved several key victories and laid the groundwork for the Hussite King George of Podebrady (Jiriho z Podebrad) to come to power in 1458.
Jan got the better part of the deal with death at the stake because he now has this monument. George from Podebrady got a metro station named after him (Jiriho z Podebrad).
