Astronomical Clock (Orloj)

this Sight was last updated on 13 Jun 04

This clockís masterful design is the work of the clockmaker Hanus from the year 1490. It is rumoured that the officials liked his work so much that they had him blinded so he could never reproduce it. Now thatís appreciation!
The clock has undergone many renovations, but the actual mechanics of the clock are over 400 years old, and were implemented by Jan Taborsky in the mid 16th century.
Every hour on the hour, the twelve Apostles revolve through the open window, while the figures of Vanity and Greed (on the left) and Death and the Turk (on the right) move as well. This is the kind of thing that kids loved in the 16th century!
The outer ring of Arabic numbers measures Old Bohemian time, in which the day was based on the sun. The Roman numerals depict our time. The blue represents the daylight hours of Babylonian time, and the circle with Astrological symbols records the movement of the sun and moon throught the 12 signs of the Zodiac. Does your watch do that?

You can also go to the top of the tower. Entrance is through the Tourist Information office to the left of the main clock faces. Entrance to the tower is around 50 crowns. There is a walkway and a lift. However WATCH OUT for pick pockets behind you while you are admiring the view!!!
