This is the place to be in Old Town and serves as a good central location to orient yourself. Did we mention that it's also completely breathtaking?
From the year 1200, when the square served as a marketplace and crossroads for trade, through the public executions of anti-Hapsburg leaders in 1621 to the throngs of visitors from all over the world today the square has remained the focal point of pedestrian traffic through the city.
The Square is dominated by three major landmarks: The Astronomical Clock and Old Town Hall, Tyn Cathedral, and Church of St.Nicholas. Franz Kafka lived as a boy in the Minute House (U Minuty), the black and white graffitoed building to the left of the Astronomical Clock and Old Town Hall, spent a good deal of time at the Golz-Kinsky Palace (his father had a shop there), and in a literary salon that was housed in At the Golden Unicorn (directly to the left of Zelezna Street).
Many of the buildings along the square still bear the ornate signage which served as their addresses (At the Storks, At the Blue Star, etc.).
The monument to Jan Hus, famous Czech hero, also draws the eye, and myriad cafes and restaurants provide refreshment from the overwhelming sense of history and beauty compacted into this square. Additional information: A wonderful Christmas market is set up around the large Chirstmas tree here during the hoidays. A similar market also takes places here during Easter.
