Originally an early Gothic castle used as a residence by the Olomouc Bishops in the 13th century and built on the site of a Roman court was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century in late Gothic style, and in Renaissance style at the beginning of the 16th century. A tall round tower dates back to 1510. Todayís massive archbishop residence structure is the integrated work of G. Luchesa and G. P. Tencally from the end of the 17th century. The chateau was damaged by fire in 1637 during the Thirty Years War and that is why Karel of Lichtenstein-Kastelkorun had it rebuilt. This art loving builder laid the ground-work for a wide-ranging art collection and his bishop followers gradually created a chateau seat with extraordinarily valuable art decorations and rich collections. The first Constituent imperial assembly took place in the Grand Hall in the years 1848 to 1849.
