Kutna Hora is a small historical town in south Bohemia. It was a silver-mining haven in the second half of the 13th century. It’s architecture ranges from Gothic to Neo-Classical. The town has a relaxed feel about it and it is nice to just wander around it’s streets and lanes, particularly on a fine warm day. There are a number of nice cafes, restaurants and shops around the centre. If you start your day in the central Palackého náměstí, you can pick up a list of attractions, and a map of the town, in the friendly and helpful Tourist Information Centre in the square. There are a good number of sights for the tourist, and the following is just a small sample of what can be seen here.

The Bohemian/Gothic cathedral of St. Barbora (sometimes referred to as St. Barbara) with it’s three massive tent shaped spires, rivals St. Vitus cathedral of Prague Castle and was designed by the same architect. Lookout for items that make reference to the town’s mining past, such as the mining scenes depicted on the murals in the nave, and the effigies in front of the altar. The cathedral is open daily, except Mondays and there is a small entrance fee. Note that no photography is allowed inside.

The Ossuary, or Bone Church, in Sedlec, which is on the outskirts of the town (a bus ride away towards the main train station) is a chapel containing a fantastic, display of human bones, that date from the 15th century. You will never see anything exactly like it! Estimates suggest that the bones could be from as many as 40,000 people. They are displayed in a tasteful, artistic way and really shouldn’t be missed if you visit the town. The earth in the cemetery is said to be part of the Holy Land, because centuries ago, the Abbot of the monastery is reputed to have brought a handful of earth from the Grave of the Lord in Jerusalem and scattered it here. There is a nominal entrance fee and the Ossuary is open daily. Do take your camera, because it is well worth the small fee charged to take photos in the chapel.

Kutna Hora makes a great day, or weekend, trip being just an hour away from Prague by the train. Public transport is still very reasonable here in the Czech Republic, so, go on, treat yourself, go first class, and have a wonderful time.

Direct trains run from Hlavni Nadrazi (main station) every two hours. Buses run from Florenc bus station. The main Kutna Hora station is on the edge of the town. From the main station change to a small local train for Kutna Hora město (town) station.
