Josef Svejkthis Famous Czech Person was last updated on 27 Dec 03
Not a real person, but you wouldn't know that for the number of places around Prague bearing his name or image. Josef Svejk is perhaps better know as 'The Good Soldier Svejk', the eponymous character of Jaroslav Hasek's book. Svejk served in the 'Imperial and Royal' Austro-Hungarian army in the first world war, and the book chronicles the amusing episodes and scrapes Svejk gets himself into. Most likely to say 'Humbly report sir, I'm an idiot'.
The book's a damn good read, and very amusing. The translator did a great job of maintaining the humour.
